Betsy DeVos: American Politician with a Philanthropic Heart

Betsy DeVos is a renowned politician, philanthropist, businesswoman, and US Education Secretary. She was born in 1958 and is known for supporting school voucher and school choice programs. The multi-talented philanthropist was raised up in Holland Michigan and attended the Holland Christian High School. She joined Calvin College for an Arts degree in business economics. While in school, she participated in political activities.

 

Donald Trump selected Betsy DeVos to be the new education secretary. She will be succeeding John King who has helped the position since March of 2016. DeVos works with her husband Dick to lead the Windquest Group, an entity that invests in manufacturing, clean energy, and technology.

 

Dick DeVos, Amway former president, managed the direct marketing company that he inherited from his father. He used wealth from Amway to build the DeVos family fortune. DeVos family charity work is broad and goes back decades. They rank at the top as among the most dominant conservative donors over the years. The DeVoses pour millions of dollars into arrays of legal groups, and leadership institutes. The reputable family has financed both national and local projects especially the election-related parties.

Betsy DeVos has co-chaired with her husband and founded the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation in Michigan. The movement focuses on improving the level of education in this region. It helps in supporting Michigan school choice. West Michigan Aviation Academy receives resources from the movement. In 2010 the DeVos established the aviation school. The family foundation also funds two private Christian schools run by Potter’s House and Education Freedom Fund.

 

DeVos Family Foundation supports the Foundation for Excellence in Education (FEE) and American Federation for Children (AFC). Betsy welcomes additional insights from her beneficiaries on matters relating to education. She works with prominent people like Senator Joseph Lieberman and Campbell Brown, former news anchor, to lead AFC. AFC works with the Alliance for School Choice and American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

 

DeVos is also a member of the FEE board. The education think tank was started by Jeb Bush, former Florida Governor and GOP presidential candidate. Other FEE officials include Chancellor Joel Klein and Charles Schwab, former State Secretary Condoleezza Rice. FEE receives finances from education reformer donors like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Broad Foundation, Walton Family Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation. FEE participates in supporting school choice through the charter schools and upholding the Common Core State Standards.

DeVos Family Foundation has interest in arts and health care. It is among the major ArtPrize supporters, an annual art event in Grand Rapids. The organization has come up with programs at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital to support the pediatric oncology. The hospital was named after Dick’s mother.
